When Good Hair Goes Bad: Lemon + Conditioner, A Recipe to Save Disaster!!!

Have you tried to make a colour change at home, and ended up with a ghastly cast on your hair? Think you need to bleach, colour remove or throw more colour on top to fix your flaw? Think again, and try this natural remedy with stuff you can find in your fridge and shower!

My account:
I thought it would be a FABULOUS idea to tone down my obvious blonde to a more subtle, natural colour at home, on my own...with boxed dye. This will come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that knows me.  After the recommended 10 minutes, my beautiful vision washed away in the bathroom sink to reveal a terrible grey cast on my once goldie locks.  With a trip to London, England on the horizon, and frazzled elderly hair on my head, I quickly sought the advice of search engines for a recommendation on something I could do to reverse this catastrophe.
It was on this search I came across missmassacre . net 's experience on YouTube with blonde-gone grey locks, and the results she got with using this handcrafted remedy.  I was amazed at the results, and couldn't believe that in my 10+ years of tormenting my hair I had never heard of or tried this recipe to fix disaster.

Before-GREY!
After-Honey Blonde! :D
This can be used to remove/tone down at home mishaps on any hair colour from haywire blonde, to sharpie marker black.  It is not recommended to remove red hues however.

Lemon + Conditioner: A Recipe for Disasters!

3/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup conditioner (I used Aussie Moisture Repair, but anyone will do)

Mix the ingredients until well blended and SATURATE dry, freshly erred locks (mine had been dyed about 9 hours prior) with the mixture. Leave on hair 30 mins-1 hour (I left mine on for 2 hours).  Rinse hair and follow up with a conditioning treatment if desired (I used an Argan deep conditioner).

The colour should be lifted or toned down to a much more appealing hue.  My hair was left the colour I had wanted to end up with in the first place!  A golden/honey blonde as opposed to light bulb bleach, then grey.  It was also was left in much better condition.
If you have ended up with that obvious fake black hue, and wish to not have such a harsh, 'I just coloured my hair with a permanent marker to cut down on cost' look, this will remove that hard black and leave you with a more natural raven appearance

  3. This blog saved me from much unwanted embarrassment, stupidly yesterday in preparation for New Years Eve i used blonde box dye in my already blonde hair to touch up my dark roots which i have done numerous times before. Stupidly i decided to use a new dye, the Garnier Olia 10.0 and much to my horror after approx. 20 mins my hair was GREY, after about an hour of panicking i found this blog. I left the lemon juice in my hair for about 90mins and after rinsing my blonde hair was back. Really words cant explain how grateful i am, as i was ready to never leave the house until my colour had returned. THANKYOU

  4. I really wish I read this before going to the salon! I had platinum blonde hair that turned greyish green when I tried to dye it brown. The salon colored my hair a light ash brown but it still has a grey tint to it that I hate! The color is kinda similar to yours and I was wondering if this lemon trick will help get rid of the ash/grey tint and make my hair alittle more blonde?

  5. Totally worked on my green/black roots! I hennaed my hair and it left me with bright copper roots and deep red length. I thought it was a good idea to put indigo on my roots to tone it down. WRONG! Left the top of my head with an awful green/black swamp color! I used your method and left it on 2 hours. And voila! The roots are now a deep auburn color, which transitions nicely into the much redder length. Gives it dimension. Glad I gave lemon juice a shot before I started pulling all of the scarves out of my closet. So thank you thank you thank you!! I first used a mineral chelating treatment from Sally's. Little purple packet that contains citric acid and ascorbic acid. Then I did the lemon juice and conditioner. :)

  10. Question... I've had the ombré/balayage done to my hair for a while now! Yesterday I had my hair stylist put a dark base (my natural color is almost black) as well as a some chunky highlights on my hair! The ends where my hair was blonde has turned an ashy grey!!! 12. Mama Van D and contributing Ladies,
I cannot tell you how thankful I was to see this post! History - natural strawberry blonde, heavy on the blonde in summer and more red in the winter. Nobody does strawberry blonde color and I was going gray, so I've been using an 8G root coloring kit for about 2 years now. Well, decided that the gray would be easier to cover with an all over coloring. Well ... that brings me to the gray/green outcome of that event. Needless to say I was horrified since I've never ever had anything close to this type of issue. Saw a ketchup home remedy - tried it. Some of the green was gone, but still gray/green. Went to bed hating the thought of anything with ketchup ever again and heartbroken it didn't work. Got up this morning searching again for a fix and saw this post. Tried the solution for 1 and half hours and "AAAAAHHHHHH" the angels sang! :) Color was the color I was aiming for and the gray is actually still covered!!! All you ladies saved me from a very ugly Christmas! Thanks to all you brave souls and most especially the ones that share information instead of hoarding it!!

I am NOT a hair professional and I do not have any experience filling bleached, then grey hair back to dark brown, and I do not know what kinds of dye you have used on your hair...so my advice would be to visit a salon and get a colour correction from a colour professional. I wish you the best !

I bleached my hair and it turned white and yellow, so I put a light ash blonde dye in straight after. 20 minutes of processing time later I looked in the mirror and could tell something was wrong. The colour looked so strange. Rinsed it out and dried it and its blue/grey, getting darker blue towards the ends. I look like a witch ! I'm doing the lemon conditioner now. Its been in about 15 minutes, I'm not sure if there's a change yet but I think maybe its starting to look better. Hard to tell cause its still soaking wet. Praying like mad this works.

  31. Oh my goodness I'm am currently writing this with your lemon juice solution in my hair. Here is what happened to me. I went to Sallys to get toner because when I dye my hair from a box it always ends up with brassy tones and I use the toner to get it perfect blonde. Well while I was there I figured, you know what I'll try a hair color from here. I'm sure it's way better. The girl gave me ASH blonde dye and I mixed it at home. My hair turned grey on top and it was like half developed on the sides. I panicked as I am in sales and I need to look good all the time. I read online that you can dye with a warmer golden blonde and it should cancel out. Well it kinda helped but now the top of my head is a nicer ashy blonde and my sides are brassy red/orange/yellow. I had to take today off. OMG I hope this works and I will update but thank you so much for posting this!!

  41. Hi! I'm seeing so many positive outcomes here that I'm thisclose to trying this trick. So...I have dark brown hair that I've highlighted and bleached a few times trying to get to platinum blonde. I love my dark roots with the blonde so I let my roots grow in a couple inches before re-doing them. Because I'm poor I bleached my roots myself for the first time a few days ago. They were still pretty orange so I did it again in the same day. Two hours total with bleach on my roots. I bleached a few of the highlighted parts of my hair too. Then I toned with Wella T18 Lightest Ash Blonde. The bottom part of my hair was perfect but my roots were still ridiculously yellow. I went to Sally's and they told me to tone my roots with Wella 1030 Palest Ash Blonde. She said not to put it on the rest of my hair. Well...it kind of got on there anyway because I'm clearly not a hair stylist :/ So now my roots are light ashy yellow and the rest of my hair is pale ashy grey... Help.

  42. My hair grows in white. I went and had lowlights put in. I think she used ash colors, a blinde, brown and almost black color. The black is nice.but the other colors look gray. Will this lemon conditioner work and turn the gray color a blonde that is not ashy?

  43. Hello. So here's my hair story, i dyed my hair red velvet blonde last year and redyed it to black after 5 months. I didn't know black would really look awful.. It was 5x darker than my inborn black. So last sunday, i decided to dye it again, dark ash blonde this time, unsure if i would be getting a good result, i washed my hair after like 20 minutes after dyeing it. And the result once again was awful, the roots were blonde but the shaft to the ends were still black. The following day i bought another hair dye and dyed my hair again, the black wouldn't just go away. But i realized i did not want to be blonde. I would like to ask if i would be using this home remedy, would my hair return to its black color? Thank you very much. I would really like to ger rid of the blonde already.

So i have short hair highlighted blonde...naturally dark and its an inverted bob so part at back is my natural dark colour. I was worried what lemons would do to dark bit so i combed conditioner through the dark section to protect it and it was fine. My hairdresser had send my hair grey with ash blonde hightlights then tried to correct with toner the following day...didnt work...i was panicking...not just cause it looked bad but cost of going and getting it done somewhere else and having to go to work with bad hair...so i tried this first for 30mins which helped so then did it again for 1hr...i used a white dove condition to mix with lemons..after second application hair was fine...no grey thank u..thank u...thank u...saved me...post second app i did put deep conditioner on for a couple of hrs!

  54. Hello, I see this works well for grey hair. Unfortunately I have yellow hair from attempting to go blonde from box dye. I've been using a blonde brass banisher which doesn't seem to be working. Would the lemon conditioner work for this? Or make it more bright? Please help, I'm already a walking lemon!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Which brass banished are you using? I have had plenty of times of being too yellow with my blonde. I use Pro-Voke, a touch of silver, intense shampoo and conditioner. It is such a vibrant purple shampoo. But I put the shampoo on and leave it for a few minutes, wash it off, follow up with the conditioner and it works wonders. If I'm too yellow but don't want to cause damage to my hair by dying it again so soon, I use this shampoo a few times a week for a few weeks and it's great. Be careful though, I used this too regularly before and ended up with a purple/grey tinge from overusing so limit what you do. Xx

  55. Hello. I had a bad experience yesterday evening at the hairdressers- was trying to find a last min appointment for highlights in my light blonde hair (had a lot of dark root regrowth). Found a local salon that was reasonably priced, and offered to stay open late to accommodate me. Seemed too good to be true. Usually when things seem too good to be true, they are. Moral of the story: do not cut corners when it comes to hair. To cut a long story short, she placed foils all over my head but left patches (i have a lot of hair) she then added toner to it, kept adding more peroxide, then attempted to blend the roots. The result was a patchy head of highlights, and deep indigo blue on the front pieces of hair.
She lifted the blue out and i was left with greyish over toned hair with ginger roots, dark root underneath and some hints of blue. Not cool!
It wasn't even a bright shiny on trend grey, it was a dull lifeless ash tone, super dull with no shine.

I decided to try and correct it myself. I am currently sitting with the lemon mix on my hair! Wish me luck!

    :)

  58. LIFE SAVER!!!!!! My hair color is naturally strawberry blonde and I have been going blonder and blonder over the past year, usually sticking with ombre and balayage. Today I told my hairdresser I wanted to go full blonde, but the aftermath was so platinum that my hair almost had a lavender hue. Thankfully I found this blog! A few hours after I got home, I rinsed my hair and then put in the solution, allowing it to sit for about an hour and 15. The results were exactly what I had wanted! My hairdresser did an amazing job with the way it was colored, but the color itself was just to purple tinted for my taste. Now, I couldn't be happier!

  59. Right it's a long story so bear with me. I had lovely golden blonde hair. I'm talking Goldilocks worthy, but my roots were coming through so I thought I'd head to the salon to get them done and get a few tonal blonde highlights at the same time to break up the blonde colour. So I go and she suggests I have one bleach and one brown and it would look as I'd like. Bearing in mind is shown her a photo of what I'd like. Now my hair is very thick and very porous and colour doesn't take long to catch. I told her this and yet she still left me under the heat for twenty mins!!!!! Usually I'm only under for ten. Well the finished product was zebra stripes across my scalp and my hair ending up being cotton wool and I lost most of it as she roughly brushed it out. I stopped her mid drying and said I'd finish it off at home. I just wanted out of there. I paid £75 for this privilege. I sobbed for most of the night as I looked a fright. I decided to go back to the salon to show her the extent of her expertise. She agreed it needed to be sorted, her solution being putting a brown toner on my hair to blend it all in. Great I thought. Well once washed the toner had bled into the white highlights and the rest of my hair leaving me ash blonde. This may be good for some people but not me. I would rather not look like Elsa thanks. I left went home and searched online for a solution. I came across your blog and thought I'd try it as I had nothing to lose. I squeezed for lemons into a mixture of Aussie shine conditioner and left it in for an hour and a half and then blow dried for fifteen mins and tbf I could see some colour change as I stated in the mirror. Now I've just washed it out and conditioned it once again and I'm now sat here with towel on my hair. I can't say I fully now what the outcome will be but I will post again tomorrow but I think it's lightened and goldened just by looking at it damp. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I was wondering if you've any tips for helping with the condition of my hair so that it's not so cotton wool like. Dawn ( who's never written a review in her life)

  60. Ok so follow up from yesterday. Can I just say OMG! It only went and worked and when I say worked I mean saved my life!!! However I will add that I think adding the hair dryer for the last fifteen mins of the two hour lemon treatment did much of the work. Now like I said I've never written a review ever as I've never been so impressed with anything but I had to write this for all the women out there who've experienced a nightmare in the hairdressers. My hair is unbelievable condition so soft so silky. No more cotton wool no more straw. And lovely golden hair. Yes I'm going to have to cut a lot off coz she fried it and a lot fell out but it'll grow back. So there you have it. A treatment that actually works and cost less than a £5. I'm going to do this every week as part of my hair regime. Thanks again. Goldilocks x

  61. I went to the salon 4 days ago to get some highlights they have always done a good job but this time I think they kept the toner in too long and my highlights aren't blonde at all instead almost blue/green/grey. The hairdresser said it will lighten after a few washes but it still hasn't. Will this lemon treatment still work 4 dayslater

  62. I just did this to my ashy ends and it turned them green :( It had worked for me in the past, but not this time. I had about 6 inches of natural growth dirty blonde hair, and my ends were still dyed/bleached. I used a hi-lift color on my hair and it turned my roots yellowy blonde and my ends a nice cool blonde. I tried to to tone my hair and it helped with the in your face yellowness of the roots, but my ends were pretty much platinum and the transition didn't look good. The toner also left my ends looking a little gray/ashy so I thought this lemon juice method would help, but it just made it worse :( I don't know where to to from here. I wish I never touched my hair in the first place but my natural blonde is just so dingey looking.

    1. Hi Caitlin. Have you tried the hair treatment 'Marilyn' by Lush. It's awesome. You put it on your hair dry and leave it says for 20 mins I think and then wash. But I leave it overnight and it makes my hair a golden blonde colour. It lightens my roots and everything. I use it once a week, plus it leaves your hair super shiny and soft. This has lemon juice in it too. It's specifically for blondes as the name indicates. Give it a try.

    2. Failing Marilyn have you tried using a hair dryer whilst the lemon treatment is on your hair. This worked a treat with my ashy disaster x

  64. I used this treatment before after going a witchy green colour (dying from blonde to an ash blonde!) it worked an absolute treat, my hair looked better than it did prior to the mishap and looked as if I had been to a salon, it left so many stunning blonde times throughout my hair! I am now darker blonde which was lovely, and ready for a hen do this weekend and the upcoming wedding of my brother. Had a bath with Himalayan salt this evening, didn't even think, washed my hair in the bath and now have a green tinge in it! Due to it being late I have left it for tonight, but as soon as my boys go to school tomorrow, I will be straight home with the lemon juice/conditioner! Hope it works again this time. My hen do dress just won't go with green tinged hair! 😂🙃

  65. I wanted to share my story for others. I have never blocked before but in my opinion hair disasters fixed this way is noteworthy!!!! So here's my story: I had medium golden blonde hair. I had bright red underneath. A little bit of my blonde ends was stained pink from the red. The reason is because I was using a red toner conditioner and didn't realize it was staining my blonde. Had I known about the lemon juice before hand I wouldn't be in this boat now. I got color oops and bleached The ends of my blonde with it. Since I didn't want to be too obvious I blended the color hoops with the rest of my blonde. It ended up turning my hair bleach blonde. I hated it so I used Revlon ultra lights on blonde over all of it thinking it would blend it. It did but I had a couple of darker spots towards the front of my head near my face. I hated that! So the next day I used nutriesse garnier medium blonde and covered my blonde. My hair was blended but it was very ashy and I felt like it was gray-ish green almost but not quite totally green. I hated it. Despite everything I read online I waited four days and died it nutriesse Garnier soft mahogany golden brown. The top of my head was Auburn and the rest of it was kind of an ugly dark blonde color. I almost hated this worse than the greenish gray Ashy blonde. So I decided to try the lemon conditioner I had read so much about the next night. This was after several washings with anti-dandruff shampoo and a clarifying shampoo. I use the lemon conditioner blend, three-quarter cup lemon juice Quarter cup conditioner and left it on for 30 minutes. The last five minutes I used a hot blow dryer on my head. I only put the lemon juice and conditioner on the bright auburn part of my head. Some of the mixture dripped into the rest of my blonde so I sort of blended it a little bit with my fingers throughout. I then rinsed and there are no words to describe how grateful and thankful I am for this website and this trick!!! My hair is absolutely perfect now. It is completely blended, there is no more bright orange Auburn at the top, it looks like a beautiful strawberry blonde all throughout the blonde. I can't believe I never heard of this trick before and all of my hair dying experiences. It looks like I stepped out of the salon and to be honest it is exactly the color I was going for in the first place. Again I have never posted on the blog but felt compelled to share my post for anybody out there that is struggling and is about to call into work like I was for a hair catastrophe. I absolutely love my hair now!!! Thank you so much to everyone who has shared their stories on here because without you I would be still shedding tears and debating on how to call into work for the next two months lol

  66. Woah. This really works. I used with serous doubt, but oh my god! I had a wella t14 toner disaster which turned my bleached locks into a blue/greyish nightmare and thought I'd have to stick it out for a bit because my hair is already very damaged (like, breaking off in the shower). I left this on for about 45 minutes and my hair is finally a natural light golden blonde.

I have to say though, lemon can make your hair very dry, so make sure to really condition it afterwards. Otherwise, holy shit. Thank you!

  68. I dyed my hair last night and.... the toner had too much blue in it so then it was bright blue, after washing it with clarifying shampoo and the developer it has turned to a grey. If I try to do this today when I get home from work, putting it at about the 20 hour mark by the time I can give this a try, do you think it could possibly work? I have a concert to go to and its one thing to have purple grey hair intentionally which I've had before but another to have green, blue grey hair? I am desperate to find something to help!

  69. I stumbled upon this post a couple of years ago and I sincerely want to thank you. I've done this remedy twice and currently working on a third. Both times prior I got blonde done that was way too pale/ashy/grey that was just awful. After the lemon trick, my hair came out a perfect buttery shimmery blonde with life.
This time I'm crossing my fingers it will work again... I had a professional dye my hair and I went in asking for red and I came out with blonde streaks that were over bleached and dark brownight everywhere else! Totally dark and dreary rather than vibrant and bright like I wanted. I'm hoping to tone out the brown and blonde to a richer and more vibrant set of colors, and lighten up the brown, too. I know this remedy will help at least make it all look more normal and toned correctly.
Thank you again for the amazing recipe for this. It works every time and has saved my life!! It may be "just hair," but its my main means of self expression, and my pride is so hurt if something goes wrong. Please everyone, try this remedy!! It will work!!!

  72. I dyed my hair "French press brown" 2 months ago. Never liked it. Yesterday I bleached the whole thing, wanted my blonde hair back. It lightened evenly but was fluorescent orange. I put a dye on it and it turned banana yellow. I did a deep conditioning and waited till today to do a Well a T14 toner, which turned my hair gray/blue. WTH?! Not wanting to put more chemicals on my head, I saw all the positive reviews and tried this mix. Whipped bottled 100% lemon juice with tresseme conditioner in my magic bullet and SATURATED my head. Wrapped it up and left it on a while checking it periodically.
It might have been on for 30 or 40 minutes. I ended up with a beautiful light blonde. Thank Goodness!!!

Toner made hair purplish/gray. Found this article about one hour ago, fetched the lemon juice from the fridge, mixed it with some Aussie Moist conditioner and HOLY COW! I'm a lovely platinum lady! 79. I am definitely going to try this tomorrow. Stupid me, I am originally a warm dirty blonde with strands of light blonde to a caramel color in my hair and I wanted to get the bleach blonde out of my hair yesterday so I bought a box dye (stupid me --- totally regret it now) and the bottom of my hair turned a grayish/green swamp color (which is where I put the box hair day)... so then I went to the hairdressers this morning and she put in high and low lights in my hair to try to divide up the tips. Unfortunately, the green was somewhat out, but it still looked bad. I have really thin hair, so I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I really hope this helps! I need help :)

  81. Hello! I actually have no knowledge about the hair colors.. This is the second time I got it colored. First time was last year september. I got chocolate brown as base and ombre foils on my black virgin natural hair. It roots grew upto 7-8 inches, so I went to hairdresser just to get my grown roots recolored same as my previous colored hair base n foils, as it was really nice and perfect before. And do toning on my rest of the hair gone brassy and dull. ( this is what my friends told me to ask hairdresser to do., as I had no idea what toning is)
I regret I changed hairdresser this time. She just did foils on the crown area and toned rest of the hair. Thats it and she still charged my $170. I have no idea why!
My hair looks so yellowish golden now. I want my dark hair back. As i am Indian and have fair indian skin tone. It seriously doesn't suit me. Can this lemon treatment correct my hair gone wrong as well!? Or it would make it more bright blonde.? I i mean will that blonde suit me?
I have no idea what to do . Please HELP!

  87. Ok so I need to know does the lemon conditioner treatment take me back to square 1 before the toner? Or are there residual toning effects? I started with yellow orange, now have much darker brown blonde with blue streaks. It seems that the treatment does more than just remove the excess blu or grey tones, since people seem to be happy with resultant color rather than just relieved to be rid of the blue tones. I don't want to go back to what I had though, or bring out any of the brassiness again,
and so I'd rather stick with this if that's the choice, although the overall color is darker than I wanted and I'm not crazy about the blue grey streaks. I should tell you though that I made my own "toner" using a demi permanent purple mixed in conditioner, so maybe this won't help me at all? If someone's out there please respond soon as I need to do something soon . Signed "I'd rather be blue than brassy"😰

    ReplyDelete
  88. Sitting out in the sun with this stuff on, I could see it removing as soon as I started putting the stuff in, turning the mixture blue purple. Maybe I should have tried washing my hair to remove a bit but I was worried it would "set" the toner in. I just really really hope it's not brassy again when I'm done. I'm so tired of messing with my hair! I'll know soon I guess, I'm torn now between the fear of becoming brassy or washing it out too early...

  90. I tried this as well: I had platinum blonde hair with light pink mixed in. The upkeep on light blonde was literally breaking the bank so I randomly bought light brown ash for my husband says it was the closest box color to my roots. After feeling sad my roots were THAT dark, I did the color. 3/4 of my hair came out gunmetal gray!!So I search a solution to get this blog. I did the lemon juice & conditioner solution for 1 hour (very hard for it was constantly dripping!) and it did remove SOME of the gray. However, it's still there and I noticed my roots are lighter brown and reddish. So I guess I could've left it on longer? Maybe just on my gray parts longer? I dunno! So I'm dealing with it until my hair cut in 2 weeks where I will get a pixie and go back to light blonde. I think most blondes to brunette always go back: it's hard to see yourself in a different color when you've been one your whole life.

  91. I had "low lights" put on my already colored hair last night. It turned a gray/ blue- so dissapointed. I just did the lemon and conditioner and it got rid of quite a bit of the ash tones. I would definitely recommend doing this.

OMG Ok well I found your blog late at night and only had one lemon so I mixed a tiny patch and did a test on a small chunk of hair ....left it on 30 minutes because I need to go to bed and I just finished washing my hair 10 times with DISH SOAP! BTW my hair bleach blonde and I used Loreal Casting Caramel...a warm light caramel...my turned dark GREY!! I didn't think that was supposed to happen.... so anyway I rinsed after 30 minutes and I SEE A DIFFERENCE! First thing tomorrow I'll do my whole head. I really didn't think it would work :( 3/4 cup lemon is quite a few lemons...how many?? THANK YOU!!!!!

  95. How would this work if I also have medium brown lowlights mixed in? My hairdresser used a purple/blue glaze that completely dulled my blonde to and ashy/grey/light lavender color. How will this mixture impact the brown pieces?

    ReplyDelete
  96. So scared to try this. Had a beautiful golden balayage. Two weeks later hair went a bit orangey in places so toner was put on in the lightest ash which instead of expecting it to brighten it, it just dulled it further! Which I suppose ash can do. Big lesson learnt! My hair cannot take too much ash! Just wish I knew it would be darker before it was put on. I'm sure it will look lovely by the end of September just wish I could reform it now. Hair underneath went silvery rather than blonde. Looks darker & you can't really see the balayage now. I'm so so devastated as got my graduation next week in literally 6 days and had this done so that it would be a lovely golden blonde colour which it was for all of 2 weeks. Even with the sun on it it looks a dull light brown with a few silver strwakd

  97. Just had to say THANK YOU for this amazing tip. I went to a salon yesterday as I wanted to go from light red to blonde. I knew it would be a difficult transition, but my hair dresser assured me that we could make it work, although it would be a process. After 6 1/2 hours, I left the salon with gray, purple, blue and white in my hair... blonde highlights all over and then as there was some brassiness and a bit of red remaining she put 2 different ash toners on my hair for way too long (big mistake). I was pissed and thought I'd ruined my hair! After using your concoction of lemons and conditioner for about an hour and a half this afternoon, my hair is now a nice dirty blonde, with highlights, as it should have been when I left the salon yesterday. I still have a few pieces of residual red that didn't dye out with the blonde that I'll have to highlight later (years of red take time to come out!), but I swear this concoction is a godsend! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I will remember this tip forever! You made my day!

  99. So first of all my bedroom/bathroom smells AMAZING because of the lemony-conditioner smell...and secondly it's only been about 50 minutes and I can already see that the gunmetal/dimgray is already gone and most of the blue is gone! I've been gradually processing my hair to get from a dark brown to a light ashy/platinum blonde. Yesterday I spot-bleached my hair and it was finally light enough to get the color I wanted. I used Ion Color Brilliance Cool Blonde and added the Ion ash intensifier just as a precaution so I wouldn't be left with any coppery or warm tones. I followed the instructions to a T and ended up with hair that was an electric-cobalt blue (pretty color but NOT for hair), gunmetal, and dimgray and didn't have time to do anything to try and fix it before I went to work. It was really bad...my boss even laughed when he saw it (don't get me wrong..he wasn't being mean at all, it was probably more of a laugh at my disgusted [at my hair] facial expression).
But for anyone else that has used Ion Color Brilliance Ash Intensifier and ended up with 50 shades of Wonder Woman and Marge Simpson, this 100% works. I kind of wish I was sat in front of my mirror while I did this so I could watch the lemon-conditioner mix work...it's seriously magical. Thanks so much for your post!!

  102. Thank you for posting this 😊😆 I've been going to the same beautician for 2 years. 3 weeks ago I wanted her to put in some low lights, we'll she left my roots alone which are dark brown. So then yesterday I went in and asked her to lighten my roots. This time she decided to use a color lift which turned a hot brass, she then did a toner for an hr then did another toner 😲 it didn't tone down the brass either but the rest of my hair was left ash grey. After spending 5 hours at the salon. This should not happen at a salon. After spending $100 and then $80 yesterday!! Don't you just love it when the beautician turns your hair grey then says OMG that looks good lol. Anyway, I searched online and found your recipe. I left this on for an hour and all the ash is gone but I still have brass roots. Thank you for posting this, It really worked😊😆

Had brassy roots and used a toner to correct it...after applying to the roots I worked the toner all over my hair including my ends which were really light blonde so I ended up having grey in any parts that were not brassy... a really ugly grey. This worked great and corrected the issue so well and my hair feels super soft...my hair would have been so damaged if I tried to fix it any other way. Awesome share thanks!

  112. i used a color remover on my hair last night to remove the black dye from my hair from about a year ago, big mistake! it ended up leaving my hair with random spots of bleached blonde and random spots of black hair. not thinking to much about it, i went and dyed it a natural auburn color. well it turned my roots red with random spots of black, like a tiger and i still have the bleached blonde under the red and my ends are black. would this help any part of my hair or no?

    1. Did it get the black dye out your hair? Mine has been purposely dyed silver/grey however I don't like it, it has been in my hair for about 48+ hours now so don't know if this will work and make it worse. I done a strand test and left it on for an hour but it still didn't get all the silver out. IF it works for black hair hopefully it will work for mine if I leave it on longer.

  115. I was touching up my dark blond roots and the lady told me I should use the Ion ash intensifier to keep my hair from turning brassy or yellow. The intensifier is an additive that you add to the dye and developer before the place it in your hair. Well like I said, I followed your directions and when I rinsed my hair it turned a nice silver and cobalt blue. It was very pretty but obviously I can't have blue hair at my job. As a freak out I started Googling how to turn my hair blonde again and found this blog. I spent about a dollar fifty in u.s. dollars on Fresh lemons. I squeezed out the juice and added conditioner and saturated my hair. I put my hair up in the cap and let it sit for about two hours. When I rinse to my hair, the blue and silver was gone and my hair was a perfect light blonde. I was so happy and shocked that this simple recipe worked. I really love the color and it looks so natural. Thank you so much!

I found that the color was turning dark but wanted to see when it was dry... he add a toner to my blond beautiful almost bleach hair and when he dry my hair it was dark grey!!!! Wtf.... he saw my face and I guess put something to remove the toner but I am now dark/ brown blond.... not happy at all:( so this morning I am going to try the mixture of miracle that everyone is talking about.... I am crossing fingers :).

  118. Hello, this blog post is relatively old, but it still shows quite high up when you Google "grey/ashy colour correction" for which I am SO GLAD. It WORKS, and I wanted to comment to add my testimonial.

For the record, I used a random coconut conditioner I had left over in a travel sized bottle.

Fresh-from-the-salon-hair that was just a little too ashy/grey for my taste turned to a nice baby blond in 45mn, and without turning the colour in my also coloured, darker blended in roots.

  120. Hi,

I got my hair done last Wednesday (6 days ago), but have only washed it once since then. Even though it's been a few days now since I got it done, do you think this will still help to remove the greyish highlights that I have???

  121. Oh my gosh, this totally worked. I tried toning down my brassiness with a boxed dye but it came out as dark and purpley like your hair. I massaged the lemon juice/conditioner for about an hour and it totally lifted the pigment.

YOU ARE A LIFE (and money) SAVER!

    1. How long was your dye on for ? Mine has been on my hair for more than 48 hours now and it was purposely dyed silver/grey, do you think mine will come off, was yours really dark?

  122. Same results here, thank you so much for your post! I had my hair done last night at salon...naturally dark blonde but I've been getting highlights to brighten and roots done to just to lighten a level or 2. But I wasn't happy with the yellowness so stylist did overall toner on me after he touched up the roots. It came out really ashy/grayish with purple streaks (I think wherever my highligts were mostly). It looked kind of cool in salon lighting but I wasn't happy with it when I got home, it just didn't go well with my skin tone. So I did the lemon conditioning treatment you recommended this morning for about 20-30 mins. All the gray & purple is gone! The blonde isn't as light as I was hoping when I lifted the ash but it's better than the gray! Thank you so much! I tried to attach pics but can't figure out how.

  123. Yes, thank God this post is still up! I had an ombre with my natural hair color being 4g at the roots going to a pretty caramel then blonder at the tips. I went to the salon to get a sombre but ended up with extremely ashy brown hair with light ashy grey highlights and dark brown roots:( I washed my hair with dawn dish detergent to strip then applied lemon mix to my hair for an hour and blow drying it 10 min at beginning and end. I was amazed. It took most of the ash tones out leaving it more neutral beige. It didn't affect my dark roots. I still had to get my hair toned with level 11 blonde to get the golden tones back though.

    1. Hi, Its most probably late to answer all the questions and im not the best person to ask as I haven't done it myself yet, I think im going to do it tonight instead. Did you do yours? if so how did it turn out? I think the lemon juice would be fine in the bottle if it don't have extra ingredients to it.

  125. Wow wow wow! Thank you so much! I had my hair done last night and it turned out very ashy which I was incredibly unhappy with and I had to endure 'granny hair' jokes at work all day until tonight when I tried your remedy and it turned out amazing! I left it on for an hour (as it was quite ashy) and it came out a slightly warm blonde with no traces of ashyness at all! I'm so relieved! Thank you from Victoria, Australia!

  126. So my hair was dyed grey I
On purpose, so it was purple and now turning silvery/ grey. I wonder if this will help me :a I done a few strand tests but didn't do much tbh I might have to leave it on a long time has anyone done it with purposely dyed grey hair and it turned it back ?

  127. YUP!!!! Sure did work for me!!! I have extra light honey blonde hair that accidentally turned a bluish gray in the front of my crown/hair line after touching up with an light Ash and 10 hours later needed a quick fix before my 20 year reunion. I made a fresh lemon juice mix with equal parts half of OGX (Organix) Lemon Highlights "Sunkissed Blonde" conditioner and left it on my hair for 1 hour before rinsing and applying a good deep leave-in conditioner for another 5 mins or so before rinsing thoroughly. I towel dried it and watched in AMAZEMENT that all the gray tint was gone and I was an EVEN light golden blonde again!

  131. I can't believe this forum is still alive...actually yeah I can because it's a support group of sorts. Let me first say that I have a bag on my head & lemon & conditioner mixed piled on top as I write. Secondly I will make every hairdresser in the world cringe and other readers say dam, glad mine isn't THAT bad. And I will also say I went to hairdressing school, graduated, never pursued it & went on to get a degree in psych...so Education and past knowledge just can't help some from effing up *sigh*

I was born a blonde. Hair turned nasty mousy color as I got older. Always got complimented on my beautiful (foiled) blonde hair as an adult. My hairdresser (and friend) moved away. My hair & I were so sad. Tried another hairdresser. My mousy regrowth turned orange. I told her mix this with that...she said "oh you don't need purple bleach or additive" I argued and said "I know my hair". Anyway. Fast forward. Had my little boy 10 months ago. My boyfriend and I decided I would stay home, he'd pay the bills, we'd save money. I gained 40lbs. His paycheck just barely covers things and I live in sweatpants. Roots grown out inches long since I found out I was preggo & I was feeling like a piece of hot shit. Decided to dye my roots. Left it on. Used enough developer. Friggin orange roots. The rest if my hair pretty blonde & pretty. I was like OK NBD. I'll re-bleach them in a few days & heavy condition for a few. My boyfriend gets home. The idiot says, whatd you do to your hair? I don't know honey...tried to save some money & no time for hair appointment anyway. I say it's not that bad. He says (as we walk outside) "you're not seeing what I'm seeing, I'm gonna take a picture and show you it's ...blah blah blah". So he's home I decide to google fixing my roots instead of waiting. Mixed developer with purple shampoo. Yup. Roots seemed orange-red & the pretty blonde turned pure white. I looked like a creamsickle. I said I give up. Go get my ammonia free golden brown hair at store. Put it on (crying)...roots stayed orange middle went greyish ends went black with green undertone....

Currently sitting with lemon juice conditioner mix on my head.
